Box Office Preview - Weekend of February 2nd

With only one new film opening this week (Winchester) the Top Five at the box office will likely remain unchanged, with just a bit of shuffling. But along with the lack of new releases, the Super Bowl being on Sunday will likely make that entire day a wash, meaning the box office will be incredibly low for everything.
The fifth spot is a more of a question mark than anything else this week. Does it go to last week’s third place finisher Hostiles? Or can The Post get enough of an Academy Award boost to continue its stay in the Top Five? In the end, I think The Post will be able to just eek out Hostiles for the fifth spot at the box office this week.

Fourth in line is a film in its seventh week, The Greatest Showman. The circus musical initially met with fairly negative reviews (including one from yours truly) has found a life amongst general audiences propelling it to another week in the Top Five where it continues to slowly build its total even more.

Coming in with the bronze this week is the only new film releasing, Winchester. The small-time horror led by Helen Mirren doesn’t need to earn a huge sum to turn a profit, as the budget is just $3.5 Million, and it’ll get a decent amount for a slow weekend in general.

Barring some shocking uptick in fans, Maze Runner: The Death Cure drops to the second spot in its second week of release, with about a 50% drop. While the first two films in the series were not smash hits by any means, it’d be a miracle if the third entry even sniffs the domestic totals of its predecessors.

As stated above, in what will probably be a low earning weekend all around, with no film cracking the $12 million mark, look for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to reclaim the top spot. The sequel is entering its seventh week but continues to have massive legs as the numbers slowly climb to completely unexpected levels.
